Villa Westerveld

Villa Westerveld – the oldest villa in Velsen – was built in 1866 on the former Westerveld country estate. In the seventeenth century, a large number of country estates were erected in the surroundings of Kennemerland, where wealthy businessmen spent the summer. A magnificent garden with ponds and the embellishment of the country house with sculptures and terraces turned the country estate into a status symbol at the same time.

In 1888, the villa, plus corresponding carriage house, storage, summer houses and various grounds totalling more than 13 hectares, was sold.

In a section of the Westerveld estate a cemetery was created, designed by the famous garden architect L.P. Zocher. Villa Westerveld has been in use as a service house ever since.

In late 2008, major renovations were started. The villa was of course restored to its former glory so that its characteristic style has been preserved. The entire interior was demolished and reconstructed, the roof was replaced and all walls treated.

The upper floor serves as office space. The ground floor encompasses an entrance lobby and two ‘homely’ visiting rooms that are open to next of kin 24 hours a day (using a personal key). This allows the bereaved to spend the last few days with the deceased and pay their last respects in an intimate and entirely personal manner.
