Concerto in Memoriam
“Only music can speak of death.”This quote formed the basis of the 1994 memorial concert, Concerto in Memoriam - but it applies equally to this day. With this now traditional concert held each year at its monumental memorial park, Westerveld aims to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to remember their loved ones.Which is why this open-air concert is free - everyone is welcome to attend.
We welcome many thousands of visitors every year and this is witness to the fact that the concert appeals to many people. Each year the programme covers (classical) music, The Last Post and a poetry recital, but it also includes the Word of Comfort speech.Over the years, the following individuals have willingly contributed to the programme: author Anna Enquist, Major A.M. Bosshardt (Salvation Army officer), Prof. Dr B. Smalhout, television producers Jacobine Geel and Wilfred Kemp, Lieutenant General (ret) H.A. Couzy, Arjan Erkel, Jan Terlouw and Princes Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld.
This year, the Concerto will be held on the 10thJune, at 2 p.m.Bas Eenhoorn, mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, will be providing the Word of Comfort. He has been in the limelight a great deal over the last year, giving interviews and speeches, after the shooting spree in De Ridderhof retail mall which is in his municipality.
The Westlands Male Voice Choir will provide the musical content on 10 June. They hope to perform pieces including Mozart's Ave Verum and Schubert's Die Nacht. Other more popular pieces will include Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and Cat Stevens' Morning has broken. The celebrated choir – familiar both at home and abroad – is conducted by Hans de Wit and, with over one hundred and fifty members, is one of the largest choirs in the Netherlands.
